Meditation

This small booklet contains 13 talks by the Venerable Ajahn Lee on meditation for beginners. It has been translated from Thai by the Venerable Thanissaro Bhikkhu of Dhamma Talks, and to quote his page directly:

Starting Out Small: A Collection of Talks for Beginning Meditators, by Ajaan Lee Dhammadharo. (revised & expanded September 5, 2016) In this collection of talks Ajaan Lee covers the sorts of questions that occur to people new to meditation—Why meditate? How should I meditate? And why in that particular way?—and in his own style he provided not only straightforward answers to these questions but also vivid analogies.

Earlier in 2016 this book was expanded with two new talks that had never been published before—“Merit” and “On Target”—along with complete translations of the talks “The Art of Letting Go” and “At the Tip of Your Nose.”

With the newest edition, Starting Out Small now includes another section of newly translated Dhamma talks, featuring one of Ajaan Lee’s longest recorded sermons, “Recollection of Virtue.”

This is an excellent guide for the beginning meditator. Ajahn Lee is lucid and to the point. I highly recommend this text. It will be made available in the eLibrary per usual.

It is released under a http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ license and thus can be distributed so long as it is not sold.

War

An interesting and thought-provoking post has been placed on Searching For God about the current political situation and ‘Religious War’. It is a somewhat angry post but he raises some very valid points. Religious war is a very sensitive topic, but the political elite have grabbed it by the reigns and uses the notion for their own ends. This article outlines what those ends are and the pointlessness of the death and destruction the results from it.

I suggest you take a look so long as you do not have any extreme view points.

May ALL beings live in peace.

The Buddha’s Teaching As It Is – Audio Lectures by Bhikkhu Bodhi

MicrophoneThe source of these excellent lectures is Bodhi Monastery, New Jersey, U.S.A. The Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi currently resides there and has done so for many years. Bhikkhu Bodhi is an eminent scholar in both Theravada Buddhism and the Pali Cannon. He has authored many articles, essays and books, as well as being responsible for the translation of a huge section of the Sutta Pitaka into the English language.

‘The Buddha’s Teaching As It Is’ provides a superb introduction to Theravada Buddhism. Anyone interested in investigating Buddhism from any path, Theravada or Mahayana, will benefit greatly from listening to them. I certainly did, and I had looked into Tibetan Buddhism for a couple of years before I came across them. Continue reading

Audio Dhamma!

MicrophoneAudio is coming to *Dhamma!! I have found a source of public domain Theravada lectures that I plan to make available on this site. The ones I have lined up are by the Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi, an eminent Buddhist Scholar and Pali expert who is responsible for a mountain of valuable publications.

The audio quality is very poor by todays standards. The only equipment they had back in the early 1980’s was a standard cassette recorder, and it was the master tapes that were used to make copies for distribution, however, once you get used to the 1980’s technology, the lectures are perfectly okay to listen too. After all it is the content that is important, and the series of lectures I will be providing are excellent for the novice Buddhist.

Anyway, I will be working over the next couple of days on how to best present this very valuable material, so until then…

May you all live in Peace.
